What Is PHA ?

Polyhydroxyalkanoates of PHAs are polymers that are amalgamatednaturally by numerous microorganisms that exist in nature. There are over 150 different monomers that are produced throughdifferent microbial fermentation techniques and can be combinedwithin this family to produce materials that possess extremelydifferent properties from one another. Some share similarproperties of thermoplastics while some are more like elastomericmaterials. The biocompatibility and mechanical properties of PHAcan be modified blending and combining PHA with other polymers,additives and enzymes which makes it suitable for an extremelywide range of applications making it the ideal replacement ofconventional plastic.When discarded in either soil or water, PHA turns into a carbonsource which acts as nutrition for microorganism.

These polymers are produced using rapidly regenerative feedstocks (plants, wastes, residual gases) and will biodegrade at end of life. While some of these polymers only biodegrade in certain environments, PHAs will biodegrade in most natural environments, including the oceans.
